Gabriele Messori among the most promising research projects on IVA's 100 list

Gabriele Messori

Gabriele Messori, Professor of Meteorology at Uppsala University, has been named one of the researchers whose projects have been selected for the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences' (IVA) prestigious 100 list for 2024. The list highlights Sweden's most promising research projects and focuses on innovation through interdisciplinarity, with Messori's project on climate damage receiving particular attention.

Gabriele Messori is leading a project to build a database to collect and analyse information on damage from extreme climate events. Using advanced AI tools, the team is able to process large amounts of textual data from sources such as web articles, public and private reports, and scientific publications. This textual information, which is often difficult to collate, is automatically processed to create robust and cost-effective databases on climate-related damages.

The project is an example of how multidisciplinary approaches, combining computational linguistics, climate science and information technology, can help solve important societal challenges and improve climate risk management.
