Protecting the coastline of Java from rising sea levels
A very long embankment is being built along the northern coast of the island of Java, with the aim of protecting the coast from rising sea levels.
.The highest priority is the capital, Jakarta, where the problems with flooding are the most severe. In some areas, the city is sinking by around 20 centimeters per year.
Indonesia is receiving help from experts in the Netherlands, its former colonial ruler, which is world-leading in flood protection research,says CNDS researcher Giuliano di Baldassarre, professor of hydrology at Uppsala University.
