The interdisciplinary field of sociohydrology examines dynamics between human societies and water systems.

The 2nd International Sociohydrology Conference, hosted by Tokyo University 19-21 July 2025, gathered hundreds of researchers and practitioners from around the world with the goal to “explore innovative approaches for bridging science and practice in water-related fields”. Several CNDS fellows and international collaborators took the chance to visit this vibrant city and join in on the cross-domain conversations and activities during these three days.

A selection of presentations included:

  • Unravelling the complexity in disaster risk reduction associated with natural hazards, oral presentation by Sara Lindersson. This recent work, developed as a joint effort at CNDS, was also highlighted during the closing keynote of the conference!
  • Hydrological Extremes and Socioeconomic Inequalities: Vicious Cycles and their Disruptions, oral presentation by Giuliano Di Baldassarre.
  • Lessons in Risk and Resilience of Water Supply Systems to Climate Hazards: A Compilation of Flood and Drought Impacts in Sweden, poster presentation by Jeanne Fernandez.
  • Spatial and temporal socio-economic shifts under dynamic flood hazard context, poster presentation by Konstantinos Karagiorgos.
