CNDS receives continued funding
(2016-12-02)
On the 28 November 2016, the Swedish Government released their research bill for 2017 (2016/17:50 Kunskap i samverkan – för samhällets utmaningar och stärkt konkurrenskraft) and it is clear that CDNS will get continued funding at the current level at least until 2022.

A workshop between CNDS and UCL-IRDR was held for the third time on 26-27 October 2016 in Uppsala. During the workshop, we discussed potential future collaborations between the two research centres. We would like to thank all participants for their contribution!

Four CNDS PhD students will defend in November

Also during the month of November, four PhD students within CNDS will defend; Jon Olauson, Zeinab Jeddi, Adam Dingwell and Tito Maldonado.
Jon Olauson (Department of Engineering Sciences, Uppsala University) will defend his thesis on the 4 November at 9:15 in Polhemsalen, Ångströmlaboratoriet, Lägerhyddsvägen 1, Uppsala. The title of the thesis is Modelling Wind Power for Grid Integration Studies.

Thank you for attending the Forum on Natural Disasters 2016

The Forum on Natural Disasters was organised for the fourth time and this year the programme highlighted the effects that naturally occurring events have on individuals and society as a whole as well as on how efforts from communities and individuals can reduce vulnerability. What insights and knowledge do we need to mitigate the consequences of natural disasters? How can we build resilient communities?
The Forum was organised by CNDS and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and was held on 25 October 2016 at Odenplan in Stockholm.
CNDS PhD student defends her thesis

CNDS PhD student defends his thesis

CNDS PhD student Hjalmar Wennerström (Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University) will defend his thesis on the 23 September 2016. The defence will take place at 13:15 in room ITC/2446 (Lägerhyddsvägen 2). The title of the dissertation is A Node-Link Perspective on the Impact of Local Conditions in Sensor Networks.

New Swedish text book on Disaster Risk Reduction

CNDS researcher Susann Ullberg Baez (The Swedish Defence University) is one of the editors of the new Swedish text book Disaster Risk Reduction - perspective, practice, potential.
The book covers both theoretical chapters and empirical case studies based on current research. The reader gets a good overview of this multidisciplinary field, by describing and analyzing key concepts and perspectives. The book is aimed at both students and researchers as well as practitioners in emergency preparedness, humanitarian response and management in government agencies, municipal operations and non-governmental organizations.
CNDS PhD student was awarded a prize in a photo contest

Marc Girons Lopez, PhD student within CNDS at the Department of Earth Sciences (at Uppsala University), was awarded a prize in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly photo contest. His photo shows river branches and lagoons in the Rapa river delta, in Sarek National Park, northern Sweden.

CNDS participated in Hydrologidagarna 2016

Hydrologidagarna 2016 took place on 16-17 March at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala. The theme was “Hydrology affects habitats – now and in the future with excesses and deficits of water”.
This year, Hydrologidagarna were arranged by SLU and the Swedish Hydrology Council (SHR) in collaboration with the Centre for Natural Disaster Sciences (CNDS) and Uppsala Water Centre. From CNDS, Jean-Marc Mayotte (UU), Lars Nyberg (KaU) and Giuliano Di Baldassarre (UU) all gave presentations. Girons Marc Lopez (UU) participated with a poster and Sven Halldin (UU) chaired a session.

The first CNDS Academy of 2016 was organized in Karlstad by the Center for Climate and Security (CCS) on 18-19 February.
Progress Reports were presented by:
Monika Rydstedt Nyman (KaU): Transferring knowledge of natural hazard damage in contracted road operations and maintenance in Sweden
Viveca Norén (UU): Flood risk assessment – practices in flood prone Swedish municipalities
Helena Hermansson (FHS): Local and civil society actor inclusion and response performance
Erik Persson (KaU): Flood response using complementary early warning information
We also got to listen to inspiring presentations on cross-disciplinary research by Malin Mobjörk, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and career opportunities after the defense by Håkan Spjuth, Sofia Andersson and Eamonn McCallion from Grants & Innovation Office (GIO) at Karlstad University.
We also met with and listened to representatives from funding agencies such as Torbjörn Olsson, Senior Advisor at CCS (formerly at Länsförsäkringar), Bodil Lundberg, Deputy Head at the Knowledge Development Section of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and Olof Hugander, Head Of Staff Function at the Knowledge Foundation.
