Gabriele Messori will lead a centre of excellence on the effects of extreme climate

2023-08-17

Gabriele Messori, Professor of Meteorology at the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University and CNDS Fellow, has recently been awarded a grant of a total of SEK 33 million for a "center of excellence for the effects of extreme climate events".

The Swedish Research Council announced this summer a grant of a total of SEK 33 million for a "center of excellence for the effects of extreme climate events" led by CNDS Fellow Gabriele Messori. The grants were awarded to a total of 15 projects in different universities. In total, Uppsala University was awarded SEK 145,096,232.

The project starts in January 2024 and is initially financed for five years. After that, it is possible to apply for an extension for another 5 years.

Who will take part in the centre?

CNDS Fellows Gabriele Messori and Elena Raffetti (currently at Karolisnka Institutet) will collaborate with Lund University regarding the social science aspect and with RISE regarding computational linguistics.

What is the purpose of the initiative?

This centre will bring in interdisciplinary perspectives on the impact and effects of extreme weather events: public health, as well as social, natural and climate sciences.

Among other things, the project aims to achieve an automated way of getting information about the impacts of extreme climate events. This will produce a strong knowledge base for community preparedness before extreme weather events. Besides, this will be relevant for insurance companies and other weather-sensitive companies.

How will this centre contribute to the study of natural hazards and disaster science?

The specific focus on extreme climate events provides the focus to achieve a deep understanding of how these events impact human and natural systems. Our inherently interdisciplinary structure will support a holistic investigation of such impacts. We thus hope to provide a strong contribution to a specific sector within the broader field of natural hazards and disaster science.
