Newly appointed professors
Gabriele Messori

CNDS Fellow, Gabriele Messori has been promoted to Professor in Meteorology and he was kind enough to take some time to answer a couple of questions so we can get to know him better.
What research projects and/or activities can we expect to see from you next?
- I am starting to work more and more on impacts of climate extremes, and I am starting some new exciting collaborations on the topic with colleagues from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and RISE. Hopefully some initial results will be coming out next year (2023).
What do you enjoy most about research?
- Definitely the variety in each and every one of my working days, from mentoring younger colleagues to writing to coding to travelling to meetings to teaching and more.
Apart from research, what are some hobbies you enjoy?
- Until recenty I was an avid hiker in summer and cross-country skier in winter, as well as a regular visitor to Kungliga Operan in Stockholm. However, since a few months back virtually all of my free time is dedicated to my newborn child.
Charles Parker

CNDS Board Deputy Chair, Charles Parker has been promoted to Professor in Political Science and he was kind enough to take some time to answer a couple of questions so we can get to know him better.
What research projects and/or activities can we expect to see from you next?
- Because climate change is the challenge of our time and the stakes are high that humanity meets the moment, I plan to be part of the effort to study and understand the policy transformations needed to confront it. I am very interested in the operation and efficacy of the Paris Agreement, climate adaptation at the national and local levels, and what drives efforts to reduce disaster risk.
What do you enjoy most about research?
- The thrill of discovery. Collaboration. A satisfying finding to a research puzzle. Finalizing a well-crafted research article.
What is your favourite memory or accomplishment at the Department of Government so far?
- It is gratifying to have served as a PhD supervisor to eight doctoral candidates (six at the Department of Government). Watching all of them successfully defend their dissertations makes for fond memories. Seeing the printed version of my doctoral dissertation book for the first time and my first research article in print were personal highlights. Giving my Professor Installation Lecture was also pretty fun.
